Resolution is a moving from a note or chord that creates a feeling of incompleteness or tension to one that gives a feeling of completion of a musical phrase or section and a relief from the tension. That is, it is a moving to the tonal center or tonic. Resolution can also be viewed as the moving from dissonance to consonance. It is fundamental to tonal music; however, it is of little or no relevance to atonal music because the latter usually has a more constant level of dissonance and lacks a tonal center to which it can resolve.
