Tonic Definition  

The tonic is the first note in any diatonic scale and the tonal center, or the note on which the music sounds completed. All other notes in a piece, or a section thereof, use the tonic as a reference point. Scales are named after their tonic, and thus, for example, the tonic of the C major scale is C and the tonic of the B-flat major scale is B flat.
