Atonal Music Definition

Atonal music is music in which there is no feeling of a tonal center or being in a specific key. This is the opposite of tonal music, which characterized Western classical music from the seventeenth through the ninteenth centuries. Although music without a tonal center had been written as early as 1885, atonality became common in the early twentieth century, particularly as the result of compositions by Arnold Schoenberg.
