A pure tone is a single frequency with no overtones and which thus has the form of a simple sine wave. Although no musical instruments produces pure tones, but rather simultaneously produce multiple frequencies, the concept is useful in explaining sound. Pure tones can be generated electronically, but they do not sound very musical.
