An overtone is any resonant frequency of a musical instrument or other vibrating object above its fundamental frequency. All musical instruments and other vibrating objects produce overtones, and it is the combination of overtones and their intensities that determines the timbre of the object. Overtones that are perfect integer multiples of the fundamental frequency are called harmonics.
