A dotted note is a note with one or more small dots written directly after its head. The first dot increases the duration of the note by half. Any subsequent dots add progressively halved value. Notes with three or more dots are rare, although possible. Any note value can be dotted, as can any rest. If the note or rest to be dotted is located on a space, the dot likewise is placed in the space, while if the note is on a line, including a ledger line, the dot goes in the space above the line. These dots should not be confused with the dots for staccato articulation, which are located directly below or above the notehead.
