Ledger Line Definition

Ledger lines are one or more short lines that are drawn above or below the staff to place notes that have higher or lower pitches than can be accommodated by the staff. Each ledger line is slightly longer than the notehead and is drawn parallel to the staff. In piano music notation, middle C is placed on a ledger line which is the first below the upper (treble) staff and also the first above the lower (bass) staff.
