A notehead is the part of a note in standard music notation that usually has an oval shape and whose vertical position on, above or below the staff indicates the note's pitch, and it's horizontal position indicates its sequence. With whole notes, the notehead is larger and is shaped differently than other notes and is the only component of the note. Whole note and half note noteheads are hollow, whereas all others are solid. Half notes and shorter note values have a stem attached to the notehead, and flags or beams for the latter. Noteheads can also have other shapes, most commonly "x", which is used for percussion instruments.
