Augmentation Dot Definition

An augmentation dot is a small dot written directly to the right of a note or a rest in standard music notation to increase its duration. A single dot increases the duration by half, and each subsequent dot adds half of the value of the previous dot. Rarely are more than two augmentation dots used per note or rest. If the head of a note to be dotted is in a space, the dot also goes in that space, while if the note is on a line, including a ledger line, the dot goes in the space above the line. These dots should not be confused with the dots for staccato articulation, which are located directly above or below the noteheads.
