Variation Definition

A variation is a repetition of a section of music in an altered form. The changes can involve virtually any aspects of the music, including melody, key, rhythm, tempo, harmony, dynamics, counterpoint, timbre and instrumentation. The use of variations can greatly enhance the beauty, drama or other intended aspects of a work. Common practice period composers generally made extensive use of variations of themes in their works. A number of composers have also written variations on themes by other composers.
