Tempo refers to the speed or pace of music. It is generally indicated at the beginning of a piece with one or more standard terms, most commonly Italian words, or with a number showing the number of beats per minute. Longer works might have different tempos for different sections or movements, and the tempos can change abruptly or gradually.
