Submediant Definition

The submediant is the sixth degree of the diatonic scale. That is, it is the note between the dominant (5th scale degree) and the leading tone (7th scale degree), and it is thus midway between the subdominant (4th scale degree) and the tonic above it (which could be thought of as the 8th scale degree). In the movable do solfège system, the submediant note is sung as La in a major scale. It is sometimes called superdominant because it is one degree above the dominant.
