A staff position is the vertical position of a notehead on the staff, with higher pitched notes occupying higher positions and lower pitched notes occupying lower positions. Each staff line represents one staff position as does each space between lines. Thus, for example, a major third from C to E, which spans four semitones, represents three staff positions (two lines and one space).
