A soloist is a musician whose individual playing of an instrument or singing is featured during a performance. Such musician may or may not be accompanied by other musicians during all or part of the performance. Major types of music that are designed for soloists include solos and concertos. Some works feature multiple soloists rather than just a single one. Soloists typically perform from memory, in contrast to the musicians in the orchestra and the conductor, who usually read from sheet music.
