A scorewriter, also called music notation software, is a computer program for creating, editing and printing sheet music. Some scorewriters can also record notes played on a MIDI keyboard, can play back the engraved notation, can separate scores into parts for separate printing, and have special functions for music students. Among the best known commercial professional level scorewriters are Finale, Sibelius and, most recently, Dorico. Musescore is an open source and free alternative which has improved rapidly in recent years and is now generally considered to be nearly comparable to the best commercial programs.
