Resonance Definition

Resonance is the phenomenon in which objects will vibrate strongly when they are subjected to external vibrations or regular impulses, even relatively weak ones, at a frequency equal to or very close to their natural frequency. This is due to a transfer of energy to the object from the vibration source. Resonance occurs with all objects, and most objects have multiple resonant frequencies. Resonance is fundamental to the sounds produced by musical instruments, including the human voice. The term comes from the Latin resonare, meaning to resound.
