A microtone, also called a microinterval, is any distinguishable pitch between the semitones in Western music. Much non-Western music, as well as some twentieth century art music, is composed using scales containing microtones. The availability of inexpensive digital and software synthesizers has facilitated the development of microtonal music in recent decades.
