Microtonal music, or microtonality, is the use of microtones in music. (Microtones, also called microintervals, are intervals smaller than a semitone.) It can include music that uses any tuning system that differs from Western twelve-tone equal temperament tuning, including most traditional Asian and African music as well as much popular music.
