Mediant Definition

The mediant is the third scale degree of any diatonic scale. It derives its name from the fact that it is the note equidistant from the tonic and the dominant and is thus in the middle of a triad. It can be a major third or minor third, whereas the fifth scale degree is usually a perfect fifth. The mediant is sung as Mi in the movable solfège system.
