The modern standard piano keyboard contains 88 keys, of which 52 are white and the remaining 36 are black. Each set of seven white keys constitutes an octave and contains the seven note names (A, B, C, D, E, F and G). The standard keyboard contains seven octaves plus a minor third. Interspersed in each of these sets are five black keys, which are narrower and set back farther than the white ones and which represent sharps and flats.
