A tom drum, also referred to as a tom tom, is a type of tunable, cylindrical drum with a double or single drumhead and no snares (a series of stiff wires held under tension against the lower skin) that is commonly used in both classical and popular music.
Tom drums are available in a variety of sizes, ranging from about six to 24 inches in diameter. They are an essential part of standard five-piece drum kits, which usually contain three tom drums, with the smaller two rack mounted and the larger floor mounted, along with a bass drum, snare drum and other percussion instruments. Concert toms are double or single-headed tom drums designed for use in orchestras rather than in drum kits.
