Solmization is the practice in music education of assigning syllables to the different steps of a scale, as distinct from the different notes of a scale. Originating in ancient India, there have been different versions at different times in history and in different countries. The syllables used in English-speaking countries for the commonly used diatonic scale are Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do. These syllables are derived from the syllables of each of the first six phrases of a medieval hymn. In moveable solmization, the syllable assigned to the first note of any scale is always Do, regardless of on which note the scale begins.
