Register Definition

A register is a range of pitches of an instrument, group of instruments or human voice. Different types of instruments and singers have different registers: for example, cellos are in lower registers than violins, and male voices have lower registers than female voices.

The timbre of an instrument can vary considerable according to the register in which it is being played. This is particularly true in the case of some woodwinds, especially the clarinet.
