Performing arts are forms of art in which people use their bodies and/or inanimate objects to convey artistic expression. They are different from the visual arts, also called the plastic arts, in which various materials such as stone, ceramics, wood, metal, paint and canvas are used to create physical or static art objects such as sculptures and paintings. Performing arts include music, dance, oratory, theater, magic and circus performance. The most complex and spectacular of the performing arts is grand opera, which combines music, theater and sometimes dance and also makes extensive use of the visual arts for scenery.
