An ornament in music is the addition or modification of notes that do not alter the melody or harmony and for the purpose of adding interest or variety to a composition. It can be considered a type of decoration, perhaps analogous to the small detailed sculptures typically found on cathedrals or even to the decorations on Christmas trees. Among the most common of the many types of ornaments are turns, mordents, trills, acciaccaturas, and appoggiaturas.
