Musique Concrète Definition

Musique concrète is music that is produced using recorded sounds that are assembled into a montage. The sounds, which can be from nature and electronically generated sounds as well as those produced by conventional musical instruments and the human voice, are often modified electronically prior to assembling. This compositional technique differs from what might be termed "pure electronic music," which utilizes solely electronically generated sounds rather than recorded sounds. The development of musique concrète was pioneered by French composer Pierre Schaeffer in the early 1940s, and in 1948 he published what is widely recognized as the first composition of this genre.
