Monothematic music is music that is based on a single theme or melodic idea. This contrasts with polythematic music, which is music that is based on two or more themes, and athematic music, which is music without any recognizable, repeating, or developing themes. Often in monothematic music the melody is repeated multiple times by different instruments or with other variations. Most fugues are monothematic, whereas most compositions in sonata form are polythematic. Maurice Ravel’s Bolero is an example of a monothematic composition.
