A libretto is the text for singing in an opera, oratorio or other work. Librettos are typically written by someone other than the composer, called a librettist, although there are exceptions, most notably Richard Wagner. They may be written before the music, or in cooperation with the composer while writing the music, or even after the music has been completed.
