A harmonic system, in its most basic meaning, is the set of notes that constitutes a scale. A scale is a series of notes spanning an octave that are arranged in ascending or descending order and forming the basis for the melodies and harmonies used in music. The widely used Western harmonic system and many others are based on the fundamental pitches of the overtone series.
