Fade-out Definition

Fade-out is a type of ending which consists of a gradual reduction in volume in the final few seconds or minutes of a work. Fade-outs have a long history, with perhaps the first use having been in 1772 with Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 45. They became common in popular music in the 1950s but diminished in the 1990s and have become rare in this century.
