A drum set, also called a drum kit, is a collection of drums and other percussion instruments that are set up on stands to be played by a single player using both hands and feet for use in some types of popular music. Commonly included instruments are bass drums, snare drums, cymbals and tom-toms. Among the other instruments that are sometimes included are gongs, wood blocks, cowbells, tambourines, xylophones and triangles.
Drum sets can be either acoustic or partially or fully electronic. Among the advantages of electronic drum sets are greater control over volume, the ability to listen with headphones while practicing, greater portability, enhanced ease of setting up for a performance, and the ability to create additional sounds, including non-musical sounds such as barking dogs, train whistles and applause, that are not practical or cannot be achieved with acoustic kits.
