The cornet is a valve brass instrument that superficially resembles a trumpet but differs in that it has a conical bore instead of a cylindrical bore, is more compact because of its more tightly wound tubing, and has mellower sound. The most common cornet is a transposing instrument in B flat, and there are also A, C and soprano E flat versions. The cornet has different origins than the trumpet and is not related to the Renaissance and early Baroque cornett. It is no longer commonly used in orchestras, having been replaced by the improved trumpet, but is still used in brass bands.
