The term "common time" refers both to a meter of four beats per measure with each beat being a quarter note in duration and to the use in music notation of a semi-circle resembling the letter "C" as a time signature in place of a 4/4 symbol to indicate this meter. This is by far the most commonly used meter in both classical music and popular music.
