Chromaticism is a compositional technique that utilizes all of the pitches of the twelve-note chromatic scale rather than just the primary seven-note diatonic pitches and chords of the major and minor scales. It is often seen as being associated with the decline of tonality in Western music that came into prominence beginning in the early twentieth century.
