Bow Definition

A bow is a tensioned stick strung with horse hair that is drawn across the tuned strings of violins, violas, cellos and double basses to create friction and thereby produce sound. Bows are usually made from a specific kind of wood (pernambuco or brazilwood), although some are now made from carbon fiber. The best hair is obtained from males of specific breeds of horses and is coated with rosin to facilitate friction.
