A Cappella Definition

A cappella refers to music which is sung without any instrumental accompaniment. Although it undoubtedly existed since ancient times, a cappella music came into prominence in Europe during the Medieval and the Renaissance periods, when it, most notably Gregorian chants, became widely performed in churches. It continues to be used in the services of some religious denominations even today but has also spread to a variety of other genres of music.
